Engr. Enoch Amakiri J. George: A Celebration of Engineering Excellence at 90

Port Harcourt, Friday 8 th October, 2021

All is now set for the celebration of a Nigerian Engineering icon, Engr. Enoch

Amakiri Job George who turned 90 years in March 2020, but could not be

celebrated due to the outbreak of COVID 19 at the time. The event is being

organized by The Enoch George Committee of Friends to highlight his

contributions to engineering excellence.

A Nigerian citizen of Rivers State extraction, Engr. Enoch George took part in the

design of several modern highways in the United Kingdom. A pioneer of Nigerian

Content Development policy, Enoch George was the first Chief Estate Engineer of

the then College of Science & Technology, now Rivers State University, Nkpolu

Port Harcourt and helped lay the foundation on which the university is built

today.

As part of the activities, there will be a Public Presentation of the Book ENGR.

OGAN. This will be followed by a Lecture titled: ENGR. ENOCH GEORGE:

ENGINEERING FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT to be delivered by Professor

Joseph Ajienka, (FNSE, FAEngr.), Former Vice Chancellor, University of Port

Harcourt. The event will take place on Wednesday 13th October, 2021 at the

Amphitheatre of Rivers State University, Nkpolu, Port Harcourt by 12. Noon.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor S.N. Okogbule will Chair the

occasion, while His Royal Highness King T.E. Opuiyo-Ogube, Perekune Kingoli 1,

Amanyanabo of Kirike Kingdom is Royal Father of the day. The celebration will be

rounded off with a Special Thanksgiving Service on Sunday 17th October, 2021 at

St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, George Ama, Okrika at 10.00 AM. The Bishop,

Diocese of Okrika Rt. Revd. Enoch Atuboyedia will preside at the service.

Sources of chemical exposure are endless. Anything you can do to cut down on chemicals in your environment helps. If you are still having pest control come to your house and spray, you might think about trying a few of these ideas and reducing that chemical exposure.

1. Diatomaceous Earth 

This powder is a soft sedimentary rock mostly composed of silica. It works against bed bugs, fleas, cockroaches, crickets, ticks and spiders. Your use will differ depending on the bugs you are trying to control. Basically it works by pulling the lipids out of the bugs and destroying their exoskeleton. You can sprinkle it around the outside of your house and in cracks, corners, crevices inside your house.If you have a bed bug or flea problem you can sprinkle it on your mattress, in your carpet etc and then vacuum it up later. DE is safe but since it is a very fine powder you want to avoid inhaling it and it will also pull the oils out of human skin so use gloves if you don’t want dry/cracked hands. If you have pets watch to make sure they aren’t overly interested in the DE.

2. Cayene Spray 

ny bugs including spiders taste with their feet. They do not enjoy spicy things. If you want to keep spiders away a good trick is to make cayenne pepper spray. You can make a “tea” by adding cayenne pepper to water and bringing it to a boil then let it simmer for 15-30 minutes. Once this tea cools add it to a spray bottle and you have homemade spider deterent. This also works on your garden if pests are getting in and eating your food you can spray your plants (they won’t mind cayenne but the pests will!)

 3. Catnip 

Catnip is a natural repellent to cockroaches. You can place tea bags of catnip behind appliances, in cabinets etc. Or just like the cayenne you can make a tea out of it to spray around your house. Completely harmless to humans but may drive your cats a little crazy!

OGU/BOLO YOUTH TASK LGA CHAIRMAN FOR MARKETABLE SKILLS IN THE AREA.

 

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE CHAIRMAN, OGU/BOLO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA,

HON. BARR. VINCENT NEMIEBOKA.

22ND JULY 2021

Honourable sir,

Congratulations on your one month in office.

In the last weeks since you resume office, we have witnessed what will hopefully be the start of major changes in our dear LGA. This, I believe is a result of your proactive steps and constant consultation, intending to touch many aspects of the LGA. 

Again, I would like to acknowledge your responsiveness in decoding opinions and working actively to implement them.

Mr. Chairman, I am writing this letter to suggest what I think will benefit the youths of Ogu/Bolo Local Government as it their Development.

Without fear or favor, also, concerning the youths, I would like to state here, that the problem of youth's restiveness is not a result of unemployment, or to put it better, the problem of Ogu/Bolo Youths is not the absence of  Job opportunities.

This is based on my in-depth research. My statement here may seem controversial, so I'll be more elaborate.

If we make jobs available,  are the youths qualified enough, well equipped, well exposed, and having the requirements of the job?

Very few will say YES,

and the majority will say NO. if we take a critical analysis of our local government, we will discover that 7 out of 10 youths of Ogu/Bolo LGA are living without a skill.

This is worrisome and largely contributes to the restiveness and joblessness, we experience in our local government. 

Mr. Chairman, with the high rate of unemployment around the world and Ogu Bolo inclusive, Youth Development is the only alternative means, to solve the lingering menace of unemployment in Ogu/Bolo LGA.

Profounding solutions, I will recommend two major Vocational rehabilitation

1. Digital skill.

Research has it that, the majority of young people across the world, are more exposed to Digital skills. If Ogu/Bolo Youths, are found in this space, it will be a milestone achievement for all of us.

The digital age is expanding into all areas of our lives, and it has gone behind having only those in IT interested in this space. 

2. Industrial training

Industrial training is another potential opportunity, that will expose youths to the real world. 

Below are some of its objectives

2a. To develop skills in the application of acquired knowledge to practical work situations.

2b. To develop skills and techniques that apply to their careers.

2c. Internships will increase the Youths sense of responsibility and instill good work habits in them.

2d. Industrial training will expose the youths to the real work environment, allow them experience and gain knowledge in report writing.

2e. Industrial training will d the strengths of the youths, instill teamwork in them, and groom their self-confidence. 

2f. Industrial training will enhance youth's ability, and improve their creativity.

2g. Industrial training will also build good communication skills in the youths,  and expose them to the ethics of the workplace. 

On this note, Mr. Chairman, I am appealing that you channel your attention to Youth Development and Capacity building This will equip the youths with the necessary apparatus to undertake opportunities that may arise now or in the nearest future. 

Furthermore, we've lost a lot of opportunities owing to the absence of skilled personnel. This is reflected in the employment statistics at the free zones, I am a victim.

Apart from working for an entity, the benefits of skill acquisition are enormous.

 -It provides self-confidence

 -Self-employment

In the words of President Buhari, 202

"There is no more Vacancy, virtually every department is filled. The same thing in the state and local Government"

This may sound funny or perhaps controversial, but it's a simple truth. And am sure it does ring a bell.

There is a Spanish proverb that says "A restful old age is the reward for a youth well spent"

Furthermore, Mr. Chairman, I will advocate for the creation of an institution that can provide us with the necessary pieces of equipment, for skills development. 

Mr. CHAIRMAN, I am looking at Ogu/Bolo Vocational center or Ogu/Bolo Skill Acquisition Center.

Something different from what was built by Sir. Hon. Victor Alabo during his time as Chairman.

In summation, we can not completely fight restiveness amongst the youths but we can try to reduce it by changing the perceptions and beliefs of the youths.

If we do this, we will not only have reformed Youth but Youth that will contribute to the development of the LGA.

Speaking during visit, the Hon Minister thank the leadership of Ogu/Bolo and her esteem party faithfuls for their steadfastness resilience and trustworthiness.

According to the Minister, soon I will take time to visit each ward and go round to all the units in each ward in Ogu/Bolo LGA, where I will meet with the people on a round table.

Applauding the people, the Minister said Ogu/Bolo is the most behaved LGA he has ever seen in the entire tour.

The former Governor of Rivers State opined that it doesn't matter if you are from Upland or Riverine the most important thing is for everyone to come together and work to have a Riverine Governor come 2023.

He asserted that the fight is for Riverine Governor 2023. So today we have come just to say thank you for standing firm and unwavering, stressing that we shall meet them come 2023. "I remembered my people (Ikwerre) say when two elephant fight its the grass that suffers. Don't forget we have one year and six months to general elections, go to your units and register, and unit coordinators don't discriminate anyone. If the register is not enough we will request for more. So everyone go and register. Amaechi asserted.

Distinguished Senator George Thompson Sekibo today embarked on physical site assessment of collapsed areas around Olobulo International Market in Ogu, Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Olobulo International Market is a convergence central weekly market of Okrika, Eleme, Ogoni, Oyigbo, Ogu, Bolo and environs. It is almost near extinction as erosion has deeply destroyed the eco system, thereby giving rise to a total collapse of the market.

Having passed through the contractual agreements, the Senator engaged the contractor, Mr. Idris Mohammed to a physical assessment with a view to commence shore protection on the damaged area.

On his part the contractor, Mr. Idris Mohammed assured the Senator of a speedy completion of the job owing to the fast decline of the area caused by erosion.

Senator Sekibo urged the contractor to commence work as early as he can and ensure a quality job that will stand the test of time. The lawmaker stressed that, it is a coastal area, therefore needs utmost care and attention to enhance a lasting job. He therefore pleaded with the contractor to always be in touch with the authorities for a quality job.

BIAFRA AND THE UNCHANGEABLE REALITIES. Chief, Amb. S.M.K. Taribo Agbara JP.

There has been a resurgence, in recent times, of clandestine exertions by IPOB (INDIGENOUS PEOPLE OF BIAFRA) to recruit foot-soldiers for its illusory cause from among naïve and gullible youths with monetary incentives and promises of utopian privileges. It is even alleged that Oyigbo L.G.A is serving as the devit’s hub for strategic consultations which are patronized by converts that are either politically frustrated or ignorantly traitorous. It is for this reason that the following fundamental and irrefutable facts are herein canvassed and re-emphasized for vivid recollection and constant reflection.

a) Had the defunct Eastern Region of Nigeria, occupying the area from the Atlantic Ocean to the hinterland, and endowed with a rich variety of human and material resources, been inhabited by a homogeneous community; 

b) Had the same community suffered collective deprivation, neglect, brutalization, indignities and other forms of injustice under an oppressive, discriminatory and insensitive central government; and 

c) Had these victims of such systemic inhuman abuse, contempt and alienation resolved unanimously to extricate themselves from the horrendous slavery through secession to found their independent nation by the name of “BIAFRA”, OR

d) Had the contrivers of Biafra limited its area of jurisdiction strictly within the boundaries of the lingual-cultural Igbo enclave and not extended it arbitrarily to encompass the coastal minority domains against their general wish, will and support,

General Yakubu Gowon would have more wisely opted to preside over negotiations for orderly dissolution of Nigeria than risk the senseless waste of blood and assets to preserve it. The reason was obvious then: secession and disintegration had been the obsessive motive of his mentors ab initio. But the foregoing conditions and scenarious neither existed nor applied in favour of the Igbo who conceived and concocted the Republic of Biafra as well as spearheaded the pursuit. As a consequence, their venture naturally turned out to be a fatal blunder and the object, a mirage or will o’, the wisp! The rationale is simple and instructive.

First, the Region, like Nigeria, comprised a heterogeneous population among which the Igbo ethnic group not only formed a monolithic majority but deported itself with perceptible superciliousness. The members of this predominant tribe controlled the agencies and structures of government together with the resources and revenues. Concordantly, they monopolized no less the function of determining policies, programmes and measures than the mode of regulating priorities and means for dispensing facilities, amenities and services for socio-economic development among the constituencies.

The indigenes of other groups, notably, the Ijaw, Ibibio, Efik, Ogoja, Ogoni and Ikwerre, were treated, not as equal partners and stakeholders, but sufferable minorities and made to play second fiddle. Resentment against their apparently perpetual relegation to an inferior and servile status in the scheme of governance had impelled these minority groups to vehemently agitate for separate regions or states. But the demand, justified as it was, got frozen in the ice-box of the Igbo-dominated N.C.N.C (National Council of Nigeria and Cameroons, later National Council of Nigerian Citizens). Yet the party colluded with the N.P.C (Northern Peoples Congress) to excise the Midwest (later Bendel State, and now Edo and Delta States) from the Western Region in order, osterisibly, to prune Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s empire and incapacitate his fiscal viability. The same reactionary forces beguiled the Willink Commission, through audacious subterfuge and gerrymander, into prescribing, not the creation of Rivers State in conformity with the popular quest, but the establishment of Niger Delta Development Board over which they exercised discretionary authority.

Secondly, the idea of secession might have earned the cosmetic sympathy of some disoriented individuals from the minority groups in both the then power corridors at Enugu and within the ranks of the extinct N.C.N.C. But their number was as negligible as their social clout was insignificant relative to the overwhelming majority among the minority aggregation that had clamoured all along for self determination outside Igbo superintendency. This automatically nullified whatever type of legitimacy they could claim as representatives of the corporate stake inasmuch as they lacked the mandate to do so.

Thirdly, the devolution of the Federation into 12 states in 1967 was strategically intended to preempt and vitiate the contemplated secession. Following, however, the foolhardy declaration of the Biafran Republic, hordes of Niger Deltan youths volunteered for service in the Nigerian Army. I recall the instances when groups of intrepid Ogu youngsters braved the perils of crossing crocodile – ridden creeks, mosquito filled mangrove swamps and the wide Bonny sea to get enlisted in the Nigerian Army Battalion at Bonny. They did so, not because of intrinsic fascination for military career but to seize the opportunity to help annihilate the obnoxious Biafra and secure their emancipation. 

Fourthly, the name or description “Republic of Biafra”, derived its pristine relevance from the annulled geo-historic “Bight of Biafra”. which spanned the Atlantic Ocean coastline, stretching from Nigeria to Equatorial Guinea, and constituted the sphere of British consular jurisdiction under John B. Croft in the 19th century. Incidentally, during my sojourn in Equatorial Guinea as Nigerian Consul to the Island of Fernanda Po (now Island of Bioco), I used to patronize a supermarket in Santa Isabel (now Malabo) known as “Bazaar Biafra”. It was, infact, widely claimed there with nostalgic regret, that the freedom fighters had publicly voiced their intention to name the new nation “Republic of Biafra” at independence in October, 1968 had the previous Igbo consul of Nigeria to Fernando Po not acted as agent – preemptor in the matter.

Concomitant with this background was the certain realization on the part of the contrivers of the name that the territory of the emergent littoral states of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River was both identical and symmetrical with the Bight of Biafra, and that the natives therein must be necessarily incorporated into the Republic of Biafra without which the terminology, “Biafra” would be a misnomer at best or chimera at worst. It thus became expedient to entice and recruit collaborators among the misguiched adherents of the N.C.N.C with a view to cultivating their confederacy while neglecting to win the hearts and minds of the greater majority. But the opportunistic and superficial acquiescence of this impotent minority could contribute neither to the legitimization of the enfeebled republic nor the invalidation of the overwhelming loyalty of the minorities to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Fifthly, the Igbo DNA or psyche is saturated with as much will to thrive, excel and surpass as the passion to overreach, supersede and dominate. The indigenes of Rivers and Bayelsa States in particular should hate to endure the serfdom they had rejected in much the same manner that they should avoid eating their vomit.

In fact, fixation with Port Harcourt and access to the sea stimulate the driving force behind the perseverance with which IPOB is coaxing and cajoling the Riversites to join the movement for Biafra. It is apposite in this context to cite Ken Saro – Wiwa who, in his book, “ON A DARKUNG PLAIN” (1982) quotes the chief spokesman of the Ibo State Union as lamenting thus:

“it would be disastrous to allow any part of Ibo land to be carried into the Rivers State.

Port Harcourt is looked upon to be in the Rivers State …………. all Ibos should oppose any suggestion to include Port Harcourt in any state outside Iboland.”

The fate or misfortune that befell Ogu Community in April, 1968 remains indelibly inscribed in its history and vaguely embedded in the memory of the people. The entire population was forcibly evacuated and transported to an unfamiliar environment in Igbo heart land where hunger, starvation and death took their toll. The process witnessed the gruesome massacre of chiefs and illustrious citizens. This tragic incident gets revived in the mind of the people whenever attempts surface that encourage the resurrection of Biafra.

Let it be stressed, in conclusion, that collaborating with IPOB’s costly ambition to reinvent Biafra is not the best, wisest and most advantageous option for the Niger Deltan, particularly the Riversite, because the Igbo persona, like the proverbial leopard, cannot change its skin. There is no doubt that the prevailing circumstances and direction in Nigeria are fomenting dismay, despair and desperation. Yet recourse to secession at the behest of the Igbo is tantamount to jumping from frypan to fire. Rather, we should harness and devote our intellect, energy and time towards the consummation of the persistent demand for the reconfiguration of Nigeria’s federal structure. The achievement of this goal embodies the sole effective means of deterring and dispersing the colonialistic ambitious of not only the Biafranists but the Fulani adventurists in addition to gaining the greater right of resource control.
