ERNEST SESEI IKOLI BY E. J. ALAGOA, EMERITUS PROFESSOR OF HISTORY, UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT.

E. J. Alagoa, emeritus professor of history, University of Port Harcourt, is in the news again for excellent reasons. He is the lead author of the new long-awaited book on the life and times of Ernest Sisei Ikoli, Nigeria's first journalist and nationalist of repute. Even his peers in the pre-independence movement, such as Chief Obafemii Awolowo, acknowledged Ikoli as their mentor.

Co-author of the book is John Horace Enemugwem, justice of the peace. He is a professor of history,  and current Dean, Faculty of Humanities, University of Port Harcourt. He has also served as Vice President, Historical Society of Nigeria.

The book counts as the first compulsive history of the life and times of Ernest Ikoli. It is at once a biography of the man, and long-running history of the genesis of Nigerian journalism, nationalism, and party politics, fields in which Ikoli served the nation as a versatile doyen, and a patriotic frontline pioneer.

The book is the outcome of extensive interviews conducted in Ikoli's hometown, Twon-Brass, across a spectrum of family members, living and dead, as well as his associates in politics and journalism in Lagos. The pages of the book have also benefited from exclusive titbits in Ernest Ikoli's personal papers, official colonial documents in Britain, and archival records in Nigeria.

A nine-man committee has already been constituted to plan a formal book presentation ceremony which is more than likely to hold at the new Ernest Ikoli Media Complex recently commissioned by the Bayelsa State Government. Members of the committee include respectable writers, scholars, and journalists from the Niger Delta, including Professor Barclays Ayakoroma, Charles Ogan, Pope Pen, and Ayiba Crowther Duba, Commissioner for Information, Bayelsa State.

Other members of the committee are Professor Atei Mark Okorobia, Lindsay Barrettt, Ibiba Don Pedro, as well as Stanley Job and Samuel Numonengi, chairmen of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Rivers and Bayelsa chapters respectively. The book is expected to be reviewed by Dr. Reuben Abati. The contingent of expected guests, including royal fathers, technocrats, top-notch politicians, government officials, industrialists, and gentlemen of the press will be led by former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Professor E. J. Alagoa served for two consecutive terms as President of the Historical Society of Nigeria. He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Letters, a laureate of the Nigerian National Order of Merit, NNOM, and an Officer of the Order of the Niger, OON. The appointed date for the formal launch of the book will be announced soon.

For five years, these kids have journeyed from the trauma of insurgency and the cusp of hopelessness to an assurance of lofty aspirations. YEMI OSINBAJO

As I stood on stage with Saje, and Aisha with @dolapoosinbajo attempting to solve a puzzle together, I couldn't help but appreciate and be inspired by how these kids have turned trauma to triumph.

About 10,000 other children, like Saje, Aisha , and Kaltum  orphaned  or displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency, have benefited immensely from the excellent work of all stakeholders at the North East Children’s Trust (NECT) @nectngr Learning Centre; a private sector-led and charity educational centre we envisioned in 2016, and which took off a year later in Maiduguri.

For five years, these kids have journeyed from the trauma of insurgency and the cusp of hopelessness to an assurance of lofty aspirations. The evidence of progress was palpable as they welcomed us into their home to celebrate 5 years of brewing inspiring dreams, potentials and great things. In these 5 years, the NECT Learning Centre has practically become a place that defies despondency, displacement and despair to drive dreams for these kids.

While I thank the NECT board, led by Mr. Jim Ovia, the management, and all who have contributed to the centre’s development, especially the Borno State government, these kids with their teachers have become the real heroes of this story.

I celebrate them hugely.

TIPS TO RECHARGE YOUR MEMORY CELLS.

TIPS TO RECHARGE YOUR MEMORY CELLS.

Where ARE my keys? How many times do you ask that question? Sometimes, we are just too preoccupied to be able to remember where we put our things. But sometimes, forgetfulness goes much farther.

There are simple actions you can start now to help boost your memory!

1. Don’t Forget Physical Exercise.
Believe it or not, when you’re exercising your body, you’re exercising your mind as well. Aerobic exercise gets your blood pumping, which increases the oxygen flow to your brain and lowers the risk of disorders such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease, which can lead to memory loss.

Morning exercises can help you clear your head and stay focused throughout the day.

Exercises that require coordination are even better as they help keep your mind active. Such exercises can also be something simple like throwing a ball back and forth.

2. Get Enough Sleep.
To get the most out of your sleep, aim for 7–9 hours every night.

Sleep is one of the best ways to make sure your brain and memory are in good shape on a daily basis. Make sure to shut off the electronics at least an hour before bed to help the mind shut off as well. Limit your caffeine and alcohol intake during the latter part of the day. Avoid consuming anything that can result in a shallow sleep.

3. Keep Your Brain Stimulated.
Stay social, interact with others, learn new skills, and play mind-exercise games like crossword puzzles or sudoku.

Research has shown that keeping mental stimulation as we age is very important for lowering the risk of dementia. Interacting with others and continuing to learn is vital for keeping the brain healthy at any age.

4. Be Aware Of Your Stress.
Chronic stress can not only make someone miserable but also cause serious long-term effects. Stress over time has been shown to destroy brain cells and damage the area of the brain that creates new memories and recalls past ones.

Don’t take on too many tasks if they overwhelm you; sometimes, it is okay to say no.

To avoid memory loss, minimize your stress. Make sure you have outlets to relieve stress, whether it’s physical exercise or talking to someone about your frustrations.

5. You Are What You Eat.
Certain foods have significant effect in preventing memory loss. Make sure to get your fruit and vegetable servings. (Don’t forget avocados!); many of these are filled with antioxidants that help protect your brain cells. Eat more foods with omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon, tuna, and foods cooked with olive oil.

Stay away from sugar and sugary foods.

Take a good-quality omega-3 supplement. Green tea is another option that has powerful antioxidants to protect you from brain damage.

Your memory is important at any age. Start incorporating these healthy habits to keep a strong memory for years to come.

10 Kidney Damaging Habits

1. Lack of Water: The kidney’s primary function is detoxification and this is done with the help of water. With insufficient water there us a build-up of toxins in the body, which can affect other functions.

2. Excess Salt: Salt increases blood pressure which in turn exerts a lot of pressure on your kidneys. Restrict your daily salt intake to around 5 grams a day, which is ideal.
3. Restraining Urination: Controlling yourself from urinating can increase urine pressure and lead to kidney stones. So be sure to relieve yourself without any delay.
4. Excess Sugar: High sugar foods increase the protein content in your system which in turn exerts pressure on your kidneys. Protein amounts in one’s urine is a valid way to check kidney functioning.
5. Lack of Vitamins and Minerals: It’s important to get your daily dose of vitamins and minerals. Vitamin B6 and Magnesium are important for optimal kidney functioning.
6. Excess Animal Protein: Red meat in particular increases the metabolic load on your body, especially the kidneys. Regular consumption of red meat can cause dysfunction or failure.
7. Lack of Sleep: Sleep deprivation can lead to several health problems including kidney disease. Your body repairs damaged kidney tissue while you sleep, so better sleep means better kidneys.
8. Excess Caffeine: High amounts of caffeine raises blood pressure and exercises the kidneys in excess. Regular consumption of caffeine can cause kidney damage.
9. Painkillers: They have become a regular in our day to day lives and are used for almost any sort of pain. These pills naturally deteriorate the kidney and liver.
10. Alcohol Consumption: This legal toxin harshly exercises the kidney and liver so don’t go overboard.
