PORT HARCOURT LINK CLUB MARKS WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2025 WITH A STRONG CALL TO END PLASTIC POLLUTION
Port Harcourt, Rivers State – June 5, 2025 – The Port Harcourt Link Club joined the global community in commemorating World Environment Day 2025 with a vibrant and impactful event held at the prestigious Third Event Place, Agip Estate, Port Harcourt. Themed “End Plastic Pollution,” the celebration attracted students, environmental advocates, educators, and stakeholders from various sectors to raise awareness and inspire action.
The event commenced with an opening address by Dr. Amadi Amadi, representing Engineer Adokiye Tombomieye, who emphasized the need for urgent and sustained individual action in addressing plastic pollution. Reflecting on the environmental movement since its inception in 1974, he questioned the persistence of plastic-related issues despite decades of advocacy.
“We must stop waiting on institutions and take personal responsibility,” Dr. Amadi stated. “If each of us commits to small changes—like avoiding single-use plastics—we can collectively drive a big impact.”
He shared compelling statistics:
Over 400 million tons of plastic waste are produced globally each year.
Nigeria alone contributes 2.5 million tons.
Dr. Amadi also highlighted the dangers of microplastics to human health and the environment. Encouraging students to be ambassadors of change, he officially opened the event, urging everyone to turn awareness into action.
The keynote address was delivered by Professor Roseline Konya, a prominent environmentalist and former Rivers State Commissioner for Environment. In a passionate speech, she described plastic pollution as a “slow poison” and warned of its long-term effects on ecosystems and future generations.
“Ending plastic pollution is not a choice—it’s a necessity,” she affirmed. “We must embrace reusable alternatives, demand corporate accountability, and shift our consumption patterns.”
Her address resonated deeply with the audience, receiving a standing ovation for its urgency and clarity.
Youth Engagement Through Debate and Quiz
One of the event’s highlights was a keenly contested inter-school debate and quiz competition, which brought together secondary schools from across Rivers State. Students showcased their understanding of environmental issues and proposed innovative solutions.
Archdeacon Brown Education Centre (ABEC) emerged as the overall winner, impressing the judges with their eloquence, critical thinking, and mastery of environmental topics. The team received a trophy and educational materials to support their continued learning and advocacy.
Club President’s Address: Sustaining the Momentum
In his remarks, the President of the Port Harcourt Link Club reaffirmed the club’s dedication to environmental education and community development. He encouraged schools to integrate environmental studies into their curricula and nurture environmentally conscious leaders.
“We believe young minds are the most powerful tools for shaping a greener future,” he said.
A Memorable Conclusion
The event concluded on a high note, with participants exchanging ideas, taking group photographs, and pledging to adopt sustainable practices in their communities. The sense of unity and renewed commitment was evident among attendees.
With enthusiasm and a shared purpose, the 2025 World Environment Day celebration by the Port Harcourt Link Club left a lasting impression—proving that education, advocacy, and collaboration are vital in the global fight to end plastic pollution.
