Celebration Organized by the Port Harcourt Link Club on Thursday, 5th June, 2025 at The
Third Event Center, Port Harcourt
Against the motion: "Innovative solutions for recycling
and reducing plastic pollution are feasible in Nigeria."
Miss Gabrella argues that innovative recycling solutions are
not currently feasible in Nigeria due to several key challenges:
Lack of awareness – Most Nigerians are unaware of plastic
pollution and proper recycling practices.
Poor plastic quality – Many plastics produced are
substandard and not recyclable, due to weak regulations.
No proper waste segregation – Waste is not sorted, making
recycling difficult and expensive.
Limited technology – Nigeria lacks the infrastructure,
electricity, and skilled labor to support advanced recycling systems.
Weak law enforcement – Anti-littering laws exist but are
rarely enforced.
No incentives – There are no rewards or motivations for
individuals or companies to recycle.
High dependence on plastic – Plastic is cheap and widely
used; alternatives like paper are not yet practical and may also harm the
environment.
Conclusion:
Gabrella emphasizes that while the idea of a cleaner Nigeria is desirable, it
is not realistic without major reforms in infrastructure, education,
enforcement, and policy support.
